Radiology Services for Dogs and Cats

The goal of El Dorado Animal Hospital is to provide exceptional veterinary care for dogs and cats, and our on-site capabilities help us do just that. Our technical staff members are trained in equipment positioning and operation to provide the clearest x-ray images with minimal stress and discomfort.

Since the images are digital, the doctors at El Dorado Animal Hospital can quickly and easily collaborate with radiologists and other veterinarians at any time in order to obtain the most accurate diagnosis from the images.

Radiology & X-Rays for Dogs & Other Pets: What We Can Diagnose

Radiographs are extremely helpful in detecting broken bones and changes in organs that may indicate tumors, heart disease, obstructions, and other internal health problems. We also provide on-site dental radiology to detect problems with your pet’s teeth and bone that may be hidden below the gum line and out of range for normal visual evaluations.

Our state-of-the-art digital animal radiology equipment allows us to:

    • Look for any bladder stones, foreign matter, and other internal organ obstructions
    • Diagnose a pregnancy and/or estimate the number of puppies/kittens your furry friend is carrying
    • Check for signs of cancer and/or track the spread of cancer throughout the body
    • Detect tumors, ulcers, and polyps
    • Look for broken bones, internal bleeding, the presence of air in the chest cavity and other internal trauma following an accident
    • Diagnose hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and other common orthopedic disorders

We Can Send High Quality Images to Specialists Worldwide

Although our veterinarians and technical staff are skilled at reading x-rays, there may be cases when the results need to be viewed by a specialist to make a diagnosis. Because we use digital radiology, we are able to send high-quality images to veterinary radiologists anywhere in the world so we can develop a comprehensive treatment plan for your furry friend as quickly as possible.

A Quick Note About Our Caring and Compassionate Sedation Service

Depending on the nature of your pet’s injuries or the images that need to be captured, your pet may need to be sedated. Contrast studies, for example, require that your furry friend keeps absolutely still.

Sedation may also be recommended if your pet suffers from severe anxiety to help keep him calm and comfortable during the x-ray scan. Modern anesthesia drugs wear off quickly so your pet can recover and return to normal soon after we capture the images we need to make a diagnosis.

Why Your Veterinarian May Suggest an Ultrasound

There are many reasons why veterinarians may suggest an ultrasound for dogs and cats. Because ultrasound is a safe, noninvasive, and repeatable way to look inside your pet’s body, your vet may request an ultrasound exam for any of the following reasons:

    • Abnormal bloodwork
    • Change in eating habits
    • Chronic urinary infections
    • Unexplained weight loss
    • Frequent vomiting and/or diarrhea
    • Pain or enlargement of an abdominal organ
    • Pregnancy

What Can Ultrasound Imaging Diagnose?

Ultrasound imaging is useful for looking at soft or fluid-filled organs such as the liver, kidney, bladder, and heart. This test can help your veterinarian detect changes in the size, shape, tissue density, and internal structure of organs that may indicate an abnormality or the onset of disease. Your vet can also use ultrasound images to identify abdominal masses and tumors that may require a procedure to be removed surgically. Bloodwork or additional imaging may be required in some cases to help your vet make sense of the ultrasound scan results.
